Famous Moments In Gifting History #5: The Red Ryder BB Gun

Really, who can’t relate to Ralphie Parker of Hohman, Indiana, who only wants one thing for Christmas: a Red Ryder carbine-action, two hundred shot Range Model air rifle with a compass in the stock and a thing that tells time.” And really, who can’t relate to the begging, hinting and scheming that make the holiday season so joyful? If you have a kid, or have ever been one, oh ho ho ho you can relate.

Not familiar with this particular Christmas story? Gather ‘round for this quick summary:

On three separate occasions, Ralphie makes his case for a Red Ryder air rifle, and each time he is told the same thing: You’ll shoot your eye out.” When he asks  his mom, she sternly refuses like only a mother could. When he writes an essay  about wanting the BB gun for Miss Shields, his teacher at Warren G. Harding  Elementary School, he gets a C+ and a warming in red writing. And when he asks the local Higbee’s Santa Claus, he literally gets the boot down the exit slide.

Without going too far into spoiler territory, little Ralphie does get his wish. He eagerly goes out to test his new rifle, shooting at a paper target on top of a metal sign. Not surprisingly, the shot ricochets and hits him just below his eye, knocking off his glasses. As he blindly searches for them… crack!

Even amidst all this chaos and loss, the film ends with Ralphie in bed on Christmas night with his trusty gun by his side. The voiceover, an older and wiser Ralph, reveals that this was the best present he had ever, and would ever receive.
